Getting my Ducks in a Row

I took a big step today. I booked the ultrasound appointment. It's scheduled for Monday, June 21 at 2pm. That's exactly two weeks away. I can't believe it. I still find it difficult to comprehend that this may actually work out. I also spoke with my nurse about OBs and I decided to wait until after the ultrasound to pick a doctor. Kayjay gave me some great advice and recommendations that I may follow. I am also looking at seeing dr. Roth out of Scarborough as my dad is affiliated with that hospital and will get better care, but that is only if it is a singleton. I guess time will tell.

In other news we met with a financial planner tonight. We need to get our finances in better shape so that we can afford our future. (In Canada we get one year of maternity leave, but the pay is really poor.) We both felt really good after the meeting and realize that even though we have a long way to get organized, we have made good steps in the right direction.

Symptoms: tired (took a 3 hour nap this afternoon--I never nap!)

  1. Cool....

I know what you mean about mat leave benefits. AT my work place they top up mat leave to full salary for 17 weeks...that's better than nothing but still. If I am lucky again to get pg, I contemplate taking 8 months off instead of the full year with option to extend. Not sure...

Denver's great...ate at Maggianos. Awesome food and dirt cheap!! Wish we split our meals (only ordered the half orders each) and portion sizes were big enough to feed a small army!

Great to hear things your life can finally focus on other things for a while - like normal stuff such as retirement planning!

Oh and don't be afraid to nap...take em if you can get em!

  2. That's too funny about Maggianos. A. and I LOVE it there, but yes, the portions (even the half sizes) are HUGE. Good luck today!

  3. That's awesome about scheduling an u/s.

I know what you mean about the financial planner--we were really lucky not to go into any debt paying for our treatments but it meant we didn't invest anything (except our work retirement funds) for nearly three years. Yikes. Our financial planner just left the company so we were assigned a new one. He asked why we stopped investing and I said we had "medical bills to the tune of 80K" and he said "I hope everyone is OK!" and I said, "Well, OK I guess. Just infertile." Ha. He was a young single guy and he stammered around for a bit. At any rate, it feels good to get things organized!

And can I say one year of maternity leave sounds AWESOME!! I will be lucky if I get three months for an adoption, and it will not be paid. Ugh.

  4. Wow, 1 year paid?! That's great! I only get 6 weeks at 60% of my pay, my other 6 weeks will go unpaid. Congratulations again, I'm so very happy for you.

  5. Yay for taking such a big step! And one year of paid maternity leave? That is amazing!

I LOVE Maggiano's... counting down the days until we return to Denver so we can go back there! We split an entree, and a half portion there is a full portion at any other restaurant. It was delicious!

  6. I'm so excited for you that you're booking your u/s already! You should be able to see the HB when you go if it's after the 6 week mark and to tell if it's going to be one or two...very exciting!!!

You probably already know this, but you need to be referred into the OB's practice here by your family doctor (or your Dad - I think you just need a referral) so don't wait too long after the u/s to decide on a doctor. It will take a while to get in for the first appointment. I'll never forget that we tried to get into see a regular OB in Markham after we were laughed out of the high risk clinics downtown and she wouldn't see me for the first appointment until I was *20 weeks with twins*. Come on...needless to say we canceled that appointment and went to another OB. I realize that she didn't think that I was high risk, but there are lots of screening tests that need to be done before 20 weeks!! I would try to get in to see your new OB by 8-10 weeks so you can think about whether or not you want to do the screening tests that they run at 12 weeks and have some time to discuss it with your DH. It's normal and typical to run these tests at the 12 week mark and they normally run them for everyone but some people don't want them b/c they don't want to know (they're not always conclusive results) as it won't impact their decision to carry to term or not if there is a choice.

Highly recommending a doctor associated with Mt. Sinai...you read my birth story so you know why!!!
